
light metering tells the camera how much light one wants to capture in his/her picture. by selecting ones middle gray (point of focus) the camera learns how much light is needed in the picture. in the top photo, the screen is selected as a middle gray so anything darker then the screen will decrease in light which is why the girl in the photo hardly comes out. while in the bottom photo her skin tone is selected as the middle gray so anything of or brighter then then her skin will show while anything darker will not. this trick is very helpful for taking pictures in the dark without using flash, and also in the daylight for capturing objects hidden in shadow or objects blackened by standing in front of bright lights.
